ABSTRACT - TRENDS IN OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS - The purpose of this paper is to show research and development trends in the field of optical communications. In the introductory part gives the overview of achievements in the 50 years history of optical communications. It shows the areas where the technology borders were shifted in year 2016 and ends with the expectations in the coming years.

POVZETEK - Namen prispevka je prikazati razvojno raziskovalne trende na področju optičnih komunikacij. V uvodnem delu podaja pregled dosežkov v 50 letih zgodovine optičnih komunikacij. Prikaže področja, kjer so se tehnološke meje premaknile v letu 2016 in zaključi pa s pričakovanji v naslednjih letih.
