Why optics for millimeter wave systems?:
- Use of low loss optical fibers (remoting, distribution),
- Very wide available bandwidth for transmission using fiber telecom devices (~100THz bandwidth),
- Wide tuneability of sources.

Functions to develop:
- Optical sources: mode-locked lasers, dual wavelength lasers,
- Photomixers: high speed photodiodes,
- Photonic integrated circuits: integrated heterodyne transceivers.
