The tutorial will give an overview of advanced modulation and detection strategies in the context of digital optically-routed networking at high speeds.

In the time where proven digital communication concepts from radio-frequency engineering are significantly impacting optical transmission systems, we will highlight important similarities and differences between radio and fiber systems and point at the resulting implications for optical network design. We will review some key concepts of digital communications such as the exploitation of signal space orthogonality for modulation and multiplexing. These basic concepts will serve as corner stones for the understanding of practically relevant modulation and detection techniques in the next generation systems.

• The role of modulation formats in optical communication systems. From sigle-span systems to optically mesh networks.
• Modulation formats and digital communication techniques.Modulation, demodulation, detection, signal processing, coding and line design. Limitations in optical systems as compared to radio frequency communications.
• The anatomy of digital communication signal. Symbol alphabets and modulation waveforms. The concept of a signal space and signal orthogonality. Exploiting orthogonality for modulation, multiplexing and label encoding.
• Modulation and multiplexing. Quadrature modulation as the most important signal space.
• Coherent demodulation and polarization multiplexing. Direct versus coherent demodulation.
• Line coding and FEC. Modulation with memory and the use of redundancy.
