Service providers need more and more integration between ethernet switching and transport to optimize the investments in the transport infrastructure, minimize operational costs and also to provide the huge amount of bandwidth that ethernet broadband services are consuming. Tighter integration would provide flexible Ethernet services delivery at the sub-wavelength level coupled with the ROADM capabilities at the photonic layer that provides flexible wavelength delivery at the lambda level. The DWDM services plane needs to evolve to a new breed of transponders, which must provide the traditional point-to-point wavelength aggregation and transport in addition to switched L2 Ethernet delivery with the ability to support ring based architectures that provides spatial reuse of wavelength bandwidth for sub wavelength add/drop of Ethernet services with service protection in < 50ms and also must allow for the extension beyond the DWDM transport network to support Ethernet broadband aggregation over dark fibre or CWDM or access DWDM topologies by using pluggable optics.
