The talk will provide an overview on plastic optical fibres and their applications in short-haul optical communication systems. At first, POF's basic properties and their main differences to conventional (multimode) glass optical fibres will be explained. Measurement techniques and POF characteristics will be shown and compared to glass fibres. Some basic modelling approaches will give an impression of the most influential effects in plastic optical fibres.

Finally, an overview on typical POF applications will be given. These are for instance automation, short-reach interconnects in car networks, home networks and a wide range of sensor applications.
