In this talk, the use of air-silica photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) for telecommunication applications will be reviewed. Photonic crystal fibres can be classified into two major groups: index guiding PCFs and photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs). Applications of index guiding PCFs such as transmission, signal processing and dispersion compensation will be addressed. The first transmission experiment over PBGF will be also presented and current limitations of this fiber type will be discussed. Finally the potentials of PCFs for telecommunication applications will be summarised.
