ABSTRACT - Higher-order mode excitation in optical fibers is a major challenge to achieve spatial mode-division multiplexing (MDM) and to increase the channel capacity in optical communication systems. A widely adopted way to implement MDM consists in the “end-fire” technique and the use of one phase-only spatial light modulator. The whys and hows are discussed in this lecture.
